Lay Offs

A friend works at the Minnesota State Historical Society. They have laid off 50% of their staff. My friend still has her job, but it's being completely reconfigured.

I'm so sorry to hear about your layoff; I was laid off a little over a month ago, and I find that though it gives me more time for reading and museum-visiting, it's not a lot of fun.

I've been watching the layoff and furlough news in the arts and culture world here with a lot of worry. MHS, MIA, SPCO, MPR--it's bad enough when business uses layoffs to trim their costs, but now it feels like we're strangling our hearts and minds as well as our pocketbooks. Now is the time when art and history are most useful to us, and we're at risk of losing our access to these things.
