Quote I Just Found
"Two novels can change a bookish fourteen-year old's life: The Lord of the Rings and Atlas Shrugged. One is a childish fantasy that often engenders a lifelong obsession with its unbelievable heroes, leading to an emotionally stunted, socially crippled adulthood, unable to deal with the real world. The other involves orcs."

Ha! I'm glad I discovered the one about orcs first...
*Snort*
Fortunately, when I was 14, I picked the mature one. (You know, the one about orcs.)
It's easy enough to spot the ones who fell into the Atlas Shrugged rabbit hole. Two words: Martha Stewart.
One of my best students came by my office two days ago asking me about Atlas Shrugged. Someone had recommended it to him, should he read it?
You know, I'm a life-long opponent of censorship, but I felt like snatching the book from his hand.
I didn't, mind you. I restrained myself. But oh, boy.
